Exploring the Etiquette of the Casino Table
For a beginner, the table games section of a massive casino is an incredibly intimidating environment.
The casino table pit is actually a highly structured, heavily regulated environment governed by a very specific set of unwritten social and procedural rules.
You will avoid the embarrassing wrath of an angry dealer and prevent the other players at the table from groaning when you sit down.
Prepare to learn how to gamble like a true veteran.
Buying In and Cashing Out: The Rules of the Money
The absolute fastest way to identify yourself as a complete amateur in a casino is to attempt to hand a $100 bill directly to a table games dealer.
The dealer will spread the bills flat on the table, verbally announce the amount to the Pit Boss for verification, and then push the corresponding chips to you.
If you place a single $100 black chip on top of ten $5 red chips, the dealer will stop the game to “color up” your stack and fix it, slowing down the action and annoying everyone at the table.
The dealer will gladly exchange your massive mountain of small $5 chips for a few large $100 chips, making them much easier to carry to the cashier’s cage.
Why You Must Speak with Your Hands
If you are sitting at a noisy Blackjack table and whisper “Hit,” the dealer might accidentally hear “Stand,” resulting in a massive argument when you lose the hand.
To request a “Hit” (another card), gently tap the felt behind your cards with your index finger. To “Stand” (no more cards), simply wave your hand horizontally over your cards, parallel to the table.
You may only ever touch the cards with exactly one hand. If you reach for your cards with two hands, the dealer will instantly bark at you to stop.
The cards must remain in full view of the ceiling cameras at all times.
How to Tip (Toke) Your Casino Dealer
A good dealer works hard to keep the game moving efficiently, fixes payout errors, and often offers friendly advice on basic strategy; tipping is how you reward that service.
There are two primary ways to tip a dealer at a table game.
In Blackjack, you simply place a small chip (e.g., a $5 red chip) just outside your betting circle, slightly closer to the dealer.
Tipping heavily will not change the math of the cards or force the dealer to cheat for you, but it will guarantee you receive flawless, friendly service and potentially better subjective comp ratings from the Pit Boss.
The Fastest Ways to Anger a Pit Boss
- The Forbidden Zone: The moment the dealer starts the hand, your hands must retreat from the betting circle.
- The Drop Rule: Always place cash or chips flat on the table layout. The dealer will sweep them up.
- Respect the Player: Let people play their own money however terribly they want. Focus entirely on your own hand.
- Never get drunk and abusive. The casino is a highly stressful environment for the employees. If you yell at a dealer because you are losing, you will be escorted out by security.
The Quick Guide to Table Etiquette
| Casino Activity | How a Tourist Behaves | How a Veteran Behaves |
|---|---|---|
| Joining a Game | Sitting down mid-hand and immediately throwing cash on the table, interrupting the dealer. | Standing quietly behind an empty chair. Asking the table, “Do you mind if I join?” and waiting for the hand to end before sitting. |
| The Deal | Bending, creasing, or dropping the cards off the edge of the table. | Treating the cards with absolute respect. A bent card ruins the deck and requires the Pit Boss to bring a new one, halting the game. |
| The Exit | Walking away angry without thanking the dealer or leaving a tip after a massive winning session. | Tossing a $5 or $25 chip to the dealer, saying “Thanks for the game,” regardless of whether you won or lost. |
The rules of casino etiquette might seem overwhelming at first, but they are incredibly easy to master once you understand the logic behind them.
Treat the staff with respect, protect the integrity of the game, and stack your chips correctly.
The table games pit is the most thrilling place in the casino.
