The Most Popular Casino Games in Asia

While Las Vegas often dominates the Western cultural perception of gambling, the true epicenter of the global casino industry lies in Asia.

The preferences of Asian gamblers are vastly different from their Western counterparts, resulting in completely different casino floor plans.

Asian casino culture heavily favors table games over slot machines, focusing on games that involve high stakes, quick resolutions, and deep superstition.

To understand the global casino industry, you must understand the specific games that fuel the massive Asian resorts.

Let’s take a journey to the East and discover the games favored by the world’s biggest high rollers.

Baccarat: The Undisputed King of Macau

In Macau, Baccarat tables account for upwards of 80% to 90% of the entire casino’s gross gaming revenue.

In reality, the game is incredibly simple: players simply bet on whether the “Player” hand or the “Banker” hand will get closer to the number 9.

It is common to see individual hands of Baccarat in Macau VIP rooms being played for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

In Asian VIP rooms, the highest bidder is allowed to physically bend, peel, and squeeze the cards before revealing them.

It is the perfect game for a culture that highly values luck, fortune, and the thrill of massive, instant risk.

Rolling the Dice: The Popularity of Sic Bo

Sic Bo, which translates to “precious dice,” is an ancient Chinese game of chance played with three dice.

Once all bets are placed, the dealer pushes a button, and the dice are mechanically shaken inside a sealed glass dome.

You can make incredibly simple bets, such as betting if the total sum of the three dice will be “Small” (4-10) or “Big” (11-17).

This massive variance appeals strongly to Asian players who enjoy chasing long-shot odds for spectacular payouts.

The game perfectly captures the chaotic, high-energy atmosphere that defines the modern Asian casino floor.

Fast Action: Exploring Asian Card Games

While less common in the West, games like Pai Gow and Dragon Tiger are essential to understanding Asian gambling culture.

While traditional tile Pai Gow is intimidating for beginners, it remains incredibly popular among older, traditional Asian gamblers.

In the West, casinos adapted the game into “Pai Gow Poker,” using a standard deck of cards to make it more accessible.

Dragon Tiger is essentially a two-card version of Baccarat, designed to be played at breakneck speed.

It perfectly embodies the Asian gambling philosophy: fast, brutal, and entirely dependent on the luck of the draw.

Quick Guide to Asian Gambling

• Baccarat: Accounts for the vast majority of all casino revenue in Asia. Pure luck with deep superstitious traditions.
• The Dice Game (Sic Bo): Loud, visual, and incredibly popular with the mass-market casual players.
• Dragon Tiger: Stripped-down Baccarat. Extreme speed and pure chance, perfect for adrenaline junkies.
• Pai Gow (Tiles): A complex, traditional game played with 32 dominos. Popular with older, serious gamblers.
• Competitive Mahjong: The ultimate test of skill, memory, and strategy in Asian gaming culture.

Comparing the Gambling Demographics

It is an environment that respects the sheer power of fate, where players battle the mathematics with superstition and willpower.

If you ever have the privilege of visiting a massive Asian resort like the Venetian Macau, step away from the familiar slots.

Fortunately, almost all major online casinos now offer Live Dealer versions of Sic Bo, Dragon Tiger, and Squeeze Baccarat.
